Clancy mistrial declared: Defense attorney’s reactions & what’s next

A Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial in the case of Lindsay Clancy, the former nurse accused of murdering her three children, after jurors deadlocked and were unable to reach a verdict. It followed the denial of a last-ditch emergency appeal by the defense to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

 The jury has been discharged after a dramatic day of developments, including the members saying again that they couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict following seven days of deliberations. The judge denied a request from the defense to hold a hearing over a juror who it said was the lone holdout on a verdict.

Clancy is accused of murder after strangling her three young children in 2023. Prosecutors have argued she acted “intentionally, rationally, and swiftly” to kill her children, while the defense said she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
