Centre Hikes Petrol Export Duty To ₹2.50/Litre, Cuts Diesel Duty To ₹8.50 From Today | What Changes?
The Indian government has increased the export duty on petrol fivefold, from 50 paise to ₹2.50 per litre, while reducing the duty on diesel exports from ₹16 to ₹8.50 per litre. The revised rates came into effect on October 16, 2026, as part of the Centre’s fortnightly review of fuel export duties. The changes come amid fluctuations in international crude oil and petroleum product prices. India first introduced windfall taxes on petroleum exports in July 2022, withdrew them in 2024 and reinstated them in March 2026 amid rising global oil prices. The latest revision will affect refiners exporting petrol and diesel, but it does not directly change domestic retail fuel prices. So, what do the new export duties mean for oil companies, and will petrol and diesel prices at Indian fuel stations be affected?
