Canada retaliates with new tariffs on U.S. goods #shorts
Canada has announced around $20 billion in retaliatory tariffs on hundreds of U.S. products — the latest volley in the escalating trade war between Canada and the Trump administration.
The tariffs, set to take effect Sept. 8, will apply to a range of American goods, from seafood and cheese to clothing and toilet paper. Most tariff rates will be 15 or 25 percent, but the tariff on American steel and aluminum will double to 50 percent.
How did this start? Over the weekend, trade negotiations between the two countries failed and the Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods, from hockey sticks to wine.
On Monday, President Donald Trump threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on Canadian-made cars, trucks and auto parts at the start of the new year.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney then said his country would only return to the negotiating table if the U.S. came with the right attitude. He added that the idea “that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States” was not something Canada would accept.
Trump responded by posting on Truth Social that “someone should get these clowns to “fall in line” or, the consequences for Canada will be far WORSE!”
