Can Americans live up to Jefferson’s ideals for the U.S.?
Americans need “to decide” if they can live up to the ideals Thomas Jefferson had for the United States, says historian Annette Gordon-Reed
“Are we up to this — this notion of keeping a republic?” she told PBS News’ Judy Woodruff. “Do we really value the idea of science? Do we really value the idea of a multicultural society, in a place that has been, from the very beginning, full of all different types of cultures and religions, religious diversity?”
Gordon-Reed, one of the country’s leading scholars on Jefferson, joined Woodruff for her series, Crossroads: America at 250.
