Beyond addiction and coal mines, Emilee Hackney’s Appalachia
Emilee Hackney grew up in small-town Appalachia, in a church that taught her men were meant to lead. Her then-fiance’s arrest just weeks before her wedding changes everything, and set her on a path to Harvard. There, she realized how prevalent stereotypes about Appalachia could be. In this episode of Settle In, she talked with Amna Nawaz about class, religion, relationships and her debut memoir, “All That’s Unseen: An Appalachian Memoir.”
