Bangkok declares disaster as torrential rain floods Thai capital | DW News
Bangkok has been declared a disaster area after days of torrential rain flooded homes, businesses and major roads across the Thai capital.
Nearly 300 millimetres of rain fell in some areas in less than 48 hours, overwhelming Bangkok’s canals and drainage system. Residents have been forced to wade through deep floodwaters, while schools, businesses and transport have been disrupted.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt says the situation has stabilised, but more heavy rain is forecast and authorities are still trying to manage water flowing into the city from neighbouring provinces.
Journalist Tommy Walker reports from Bangkok on how residents are coping, whether the city is prepared for further rainfall, and how the flooding compares with Thailand’s devastating 2011 floods.
