While America has a “long history” of losing its innocence, the Sept. 11 attacks were an “authentic tragedy” that you don’t get past, historian David Blight says.
“You don’t get beyond 9/11,” he told PBS News’ Judy Woodruff. “You have to sit with it. It’s authentic tragedy. Where do you fit 9/11 into a narrative of exceptionalism and relative innocence? You can’t.”
Blight is a Yale historian who lectures on traumatic events in U.S. history, such as Pearl Harbor and 9/11.
