France faces calls for slavery reparations | DW News
When Haiti gained independence from France in 1804 it became the first country ever to free itself from slavery, but France imposed crippling debt on Haiti in exchange for its independence. As campaigners call for compensation, French President Emmanuel Macron said reparations should be discussed, but questioned if colonial crimes could ever be fully repaired.
