600,000 protest inequality, public funding in France
In France, officials say more than 600,000 people took to the streets nationwide on Thursday, demanding higher wages and more funding for education.
The protests included both public and private sector workers and were part of a general strike that disrupted some public transportation and other services. There were some clashes between protestors and police but most of the demonstrations remained peaceful.
The demonstrations follow weeks of student-led protests that have sometimes turned violent. The unrest has added pressure for France’s government ahead of presidential elections next year.
