Pierre Yared was Acting Chair of Trump’s Council of Economic Advisors until summer 2026, and is a professor at Columbia University. Speaking to The Economist’s Henry Curr, he acknowledges that multiple studies show the cost of tariffs has passed through to consumers, but argues “there are other aspects of tariffs to think about,” such as the impact on wages and “the macroeconomic benefits of bringing down the deficit.”
In this interview, recorded for Inside Economics, Yared—who served in the administration on “Liberation Day”—argues that Donald Trump’s policies “are causing more investment” in the United States.
