LIVE: Carney Commits to Moving Canada Beyond Indian Act as Kinew Calls for Abolition of 1876 Law Now

A major debate over the future of Canada’s Indian Act is underway after Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to abolish the legislation. Kinew called the Indian Act a race-based form of identification and said it is time for Canada to establish a modern relationship with Indigenous Peoples.

Carney responded that he is committed to a process that moves Canada beyond the Indian Act. He said that could involve reforming the Act or abolishing it altogether, but stressed that the path must be developed in partnership with First Nations.

The Indian Act dates back to 1876 and governs areas including legal Indian status, reserve lands and aspects of First Nations governance. Watch LIVE for the latest developments from Ottawa and reaction from First Nations leaders.
