How to prioritize safety when owning a firearm

Dr. Sandy McKay, chief of the Division of General Academic Pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, says one of the best ways to protect your family is to ensure a “firearm does not fall into the hands of someone who should not have access to it” by securely storing it.

McKay, a firearm owner, is part of “Agree to Agree,” an educational campaign that brings together people with different views about guns to promote safer communities and find common ground.

“Being a firearm owner, I can take my firearm that is unloaded and remove it from a safe and load it in under two seconds,” she told Horizons host William Brangham. “If you need less than two seconds to access your firearm and load it, because you’re that concerned about your protection, then we also need to talk about layers of safety to your home as well.”
