She spent three years teaching before she sold a single product

She spent three years teaching before she sold a single product.

Jane Wurwand started sweeping hair in a salon at 13. She arrived in Los Angeles with one suitcase and a rolled-up beauty school diploma, and she and her husband Raymond spent three years teaching skin therapists before they sold a single product.

She tells Elizabeth Gore why the chemist who held their formulas hostage turned out to be a favour, how they chose which company could buy Dermalogica by watching who turned up alone with a brown bag lunch, and why she still renews her aesthetician licence every year.
