Dennis Hastert, disgraced former House speaker, dies at 84

Dennis Hastert, the disgraced former House speaker who later went to prison, has died. He was 84.

Hastert represented Illinois in Congress for two decades. As the longest-serving Republican House speaker, he was essential in advancing then-President George W. Bush’s legislative agenda.

In 2016, after leaving office, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison after pleading guilty to evading banking regulations related to hush money payments. Prosecutors said Hastert had sexually abused teen athletes while coaching high school wrestling decades earlier.
