Why Nikole Hannah-Jones expected backlash

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote a now-viral essay about her decision to send her daughter to high-poverty, predominantly Black public schools in her New York City neighborhood — and how they both feel about that choice ten years later.

When the essay was published, Hannah-Jones says she asked her daughter, Najya, to stay off social media because “mommy is about to get dragged.”

“I knew what was going to happen. I’m not naive. But I felt it was necessary,” she told Geoff Bennett on the PBS News podcast, Settle In. “I just felt people were owed the truth of what happened when we tried to live our value.”

Hannah-Jones spoke to Bennett about her experience, public school systems and where she sees hope for change. For the full episode, click the link in our bio.
