Nikole Hannah-Jones on the individual costs of school choice
A decade ago, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote a cover story for the New York Times magazine about her decision to send her daughter, Najya, to a local high-poverty, predominantly Black elementary school. Hannah-Jones argued one way well-off parents could improve public schools was to enroll their children and use their resources to make change.
In a new essay, she revisited that decision, revealing how it affected her family and Najya’s education. The piece has sparked controversy online and spawned dozens of think pieces. In this episode of Settle In, Geoff Bennett speaks with Hannah-Jones about her experience, why school systems built on choice do not work evenly for all parents and where she sees opportunity for change.
