Australia Cracks Down On Student And Backpacker Visas To Curb Migration
Australia will stop foreign students from bringing partners and children to accompany them while they study and will tighten working holiday visa rules, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced on Thursday.
The reforms aim to bring annual net migration down to about 225,000 by 2028 from around 300,000 currently, closer to pre-pandemic levels. Burke dismissed suggestions the changes were politically motivated by the One Nation party. The government will also strengthen enforcement against visa overstayers by hiring 100 additional compliance officers and exploring the use of a former quarantine facility in Melbourne for immigration detainees. Burke stressed that those without a valid visa should leave the country.
