South African airline defends stadium flyover
A South African airline is defending a dramatic flyby over a stadium in Cape Town this past weekend.
Video shows the pair of Embraer planes passing overhead before a rugby game between South Africa and New Zealand attended by some 56,000 people. A flight tracking service says one of them passed less than 50 feet above the stadium’s roof.
Local airline Airlink has insisted that all safety criteria were met and that no passengers were on board.
But aviation experts are questioning the safety of the stunt, saying the pilots were left with few options if something were to go wrong.
