How the ‘chemical element’ of songs can unite us


The unifying force of music can “usher in cultural change,” journalist Sidney Madden says.

“If you can sit or stand next to a stranger, but then you can find common ground based on this music, and then you find a purpose bigger than yourself within a movement that is heralded by the music,” she told PBS News’ Judy Woodruff. “That’s what’s going to create a cultural conversation that can usher in a cultural change.”

Madden, along with historian Ted Gioia, joined Judy Woodruff for the latest episode of her podcast, “In Pursuit of Happiness,” to discuss America’s musical identity and more.
