The scenes unfolding in France and Spain look like something out of a disaster movie — vast wildfires, mass evacuations and blazes that seem to take on a life of their own. Some experts say they are part of a new ‘Age of Fire’, in which extreme wildfires become an increasingly defining feature of life on Earth. Joining us is renowned fire historian and former wildland firefighter Stephen J. Pyne, whose concept of the ‘Pyrocene’ describes this new era. Are these blazes an unprecedented disaster or a warning of what’s to come?
