The death of model and actress Twisha Sharma has forced India to confront a conversation it has long avoided. Dowry, originally meant to secure a bride’s future, has turned into an obligation on her family. In many communities it continues today, quietly, in the name of “gifts.” Women face harassment, pressure and violence over these demands in their marital homes. It is a practice that still costs women their lives.
