Theo Francken on ‘frustration’ within the NATO alliance

President Donald Trump brought his longstanding criticisms to the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. He argued that member countries aren’t spending enough on defense or supporting the U.S. enough on Iran. European leaders countered that they are spending more and helping with Iran.

The NATO alliance “cannot be divided. We have to show unity,” Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken told host Nick Schifrin during a special episode of Compass Points following the summit.

He added that, on both sides of the Atlantic, there is “miscomprehension” and that “we’re not listening to each other.”

“There’s a lot of dialogue, but there’s also a lot of frustration from both sides of the Atlantic,” Francken said.

Compass Points from PBS News analyzes prominent international affairs topics and America’s role in a shifting world, breaking down global conflicts, rising tensions, and their implications for U.S. interests. Visit the PBS News website to watch this week’s episode.
