Soman Chainani on ‘the right to be young’

Kids have “lost the right to be young,” says author Soman Chainani.

“I feel myself almost like a preacher at the pulpit, being like, you have lost the most important right that is not in the Constitution,” he said of his conversations with high school students. “They took that from you. I had it. All the adults around you have had it. All the adults in power had it. They got to be kids.”

Chainani’s young adult novel series, “The School for Good & Evil,” sold more than 4.5 million copies and became a popular Netflix movie. His latest book, “Young World,” is a political thriller about a teenager who becomes president of the United States.

He joined Amna Nawaz for the latest episode of PBS News’ podcast, “Settle In.” They discuss what has changed for young people and how to get them interested in both reading and the political process.
