How Vance defended Trump on Americans’ finances

Vice President JD Vance said that President Donald Trump’s comments last week on not caring about Americans’ finances were “totally taken out of context.”

Last week, a reporter asked Trump to what extent Americans’ financial situations are motivating him to make a deal with Iran.

“Not even a little bit,” Trump said. “The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. … I think about one thing. You cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”

Vance defended Trump during a White House news briefing on Tuesday, saying it’s possible to “hold two thoughts” at once.

“The president cares about financial security for Americans, but also when he’s negotiating with the Iranians, he’s talking about the issues that are germane to the concerns of that particular conflict,” he said.
